The Book

The Line is the first book in the Witching Savannah series.

The book follows a young twenty-year-old woman named Mercy Taylor, a young woman who lives in Savannah, Georgia.  She is part of a powerful family of witches who have lived Savannah for generations.  In a family full of talented witches, it seems Mercy has no talent at all., while her sister Maisie, seems to have the gifted of the sisters.  It is assumed Maisie will become the "anchor" to The Line.

The Line is a strip of energy/magic that gives witches their powers. and divides our world from those of demons and other dark beings.

Mercy lives with her Aunt Iris and Uncle Conner, who have raised Mercy and Maisie as thier own.  Their Aunt Ellen, an alcoholic who lives with them.  Her Uncle Oliver, who lives in California, has come to visit.  Her sister, Maisie, lives between the family home and the home of the family matriarch, Aunt Ginny.  Their mother, Emily, died after Mercy and Maisie was born.

The family also lives with a supernatural being named Wren, believed to be to be Uncle Oliver's childhood imaginary friend come to life.

The head of the family, Ginny Taylor, in the current "anchor" and has been tutoring Mercy's sister since they were children.  We are told she is a mean and bitter old woman who has the rest of the family under her thumb.  She especially hates Mercy, for reasons neither we or Mercy understand.

Then one morning, Mercy is summoned to see the old woman, which unnervves her as she is afraid of Ginny found out about Mercy visiting a Hoodoo priestess named Jilo, to help her try to love her boyfriend the way he loves her.  When she arrives at the house, she discovers Ginny brutally murdered.

After Ginny's death, family secrets start to spill out, many of them revolve around Mercy and the people she once trusted she finds are the ones she may have to watch out for.

My Thoughts

NOTE:  I have never written a review before, so this one isn't going to be the best.  I'll try my best to tell you why I like the story, but sometimes, it may not seem very clear as to why I like the book.  If you want clearer reviews, please go to this link:

I borrowed this book from the library, but it was so good I might go out and buy it! I like these kinds of stories.  Stories about outsiders, magic and placing it in a modern setting.  One day I hope to write something like this on my own.

What I really liked about the story was that it moved along at pretty good clip. There wasn't any drawn out explinations and it got to the point.

I liked Mercy's character and how down to earth she was.  I liked that she wasn't sure about her relationship with Peter.  It's refreshing to see that a yound woman wasn't madly in love with the first person she dated.  However, on the other side of that coin I could have done without her silly crush on Jackson.  Especially considering she wasn't going to do anything about it anyway.  That part was all a bit too pointless for me.  I get that the author was trying to give her a dilemma but I think it was probably something that the story could have done without.

Another thing I wish the author would have done is introduced us to Ginny before she was killed.  We only get a sense of what this lady was like through the eyes of other characters.  It would have been nice to kind of get a glimpse of what this woman was like without the opinions of others.  I guess it would have been another way to relate to Mercy.

I know I've said a lot of negatives about this book, but I really did like it.

Would I Buy This Book?: YES
